In the same week that we learned about solar pv panels, we installed our windows, also known as glazing. The amount of glazing determines how much sunlight will penetrate the house and provide heat input. Our house is designed with the majority of its glazing facing south to gain solar radiation. The energy is absorbed by the adobe floor and will be emitted into the house through the evening in cooler weather times. In summer, our roof overhang and shades on the windows will block morning and late afternoon sun to ensure the floor does not heat too much.
To install the windows we ensured the wood window frame was clean before we added a clear sealant with a caulk gun. We hoisted each window into place and checked that they were sitting level, adding shims to the underneath and sides if necessary. Then we drove screws approximately every 6 inches on the perimeter of each window. Done!
